While
society is far from fully accepting homosexuality as a cultural norm, it has
entered the public sphere as a subject of discourse, rather than feared and
ignored. It is in this sense that scientists are able to invest more of their
time and money into researching homosexuality. Also, the study of homosexuality tself both in its cultural causes and social effects, such as AIDS,
depression, gender roles, marriage laws, has gained worldwide attention. Research on this matter seems to generally generate more questions than
it answers and is often far from conclusive.
Here is a
special case I personally have never heard of before and find extremely
interesting. According to the BBC documentary “I
Woke Up Gay - A Stroke Turned Me Gay”, Chris Birch, a teenager from South
Wales, snapped his neck while doing some somersaults and backflips with his
friends when he was 19. He claims that after suffering a massive stroke, he woke
up as a completely different person, one who is now homosexual.
After
watching this, do you believe it was really a transformation, as he insists, or just a realization (after the fact) of something that had been there within him his
whole life? It seems to be the focus in this film but is biology really the only factor that plays into this situation?
